Sold-out concerts, autograph-sessions that turn into rumpus, a first album, Schrei, sold in 1 million copies around Europe...To all evidences, the 4 membres of the group Tokio Hotel impose themselves as the new geniuses of rock!

PHOTOS:
1) The group (from left to right: Gustav, Georg, Bill, Tom) are ready to enter the studio to record their second album which is expected on the market next spring.
2) Bill: "The life of an artist is a delight/gift each instant..."
3) Authentic "beasts" of the scene, the members of the group Tokio Hotel attract up to 20 000 fans to their concerts in Germany!

When did your group debuted?
Bill: Together with Tom, my twin brother, we've been playing music from our childhood, at home as well as on stage. It's been six years ago that we met Gustav and Georg in a small club of Magdeburg where we used to sing on weekends. Just after that, evidently we have talked about music, then we have exchanged our ideas and evoked our dream of creating a band. Therefore I suggested that we should give it a try together...

Were you all agreed on the music style that you'd adopt?
Gustav: We have debuted together under the name Devilish. Our first music pieces wanted to be punk-inspired, but we have rapidly evolved to a more rock sound. A few months later we had our own style. Then we have re-named the group Tokio Hotel: <<Tokio>> (in German Tokyo is written with "i" instead of "y" because of our fascination towards the capital of Japan and <<Hotel>> in an blink of an eye at our life as artists that often guides us on the roads.
Tom: Each one of us has his personal musical culture. Georg goes for nothing else but the anglo-saxon rock sound of Oasis and Fall Out Boy, Gustav adores Metallica, Bill is a fan of Green Day, while I am for the hip-hop rhytms. But our musical differences have naver been an obstacle for the group. On the contrary, they have generated an authentic musical alchemy.

At what age did you begin dealing with music?
Bill: At 7 years old, Tom and me held on (?) to a guitar. At 10 I was writing my first songs.
Gustav: I've started playing at the drums at 5 years old, by beating on cans! (all laugh)
Georg: I was 12 when I took my first lessons of bass-guitar playing.

Within the band, which is the role of whom?
Tom: Bill is the one who writes the lyrics, a reserved domain in which he excels. On our side, Gustav, Georg and me, we are the ones who compose the music. First of all we put the melodies in acoustic version, and afterwards we develop all sorts of arrangements for the stage. Obviously, our songs are created in a tight collaboration with our producers (aka: Peter Hoffman,Pat Benzner, Dave Roth and David Jost from Universal Record Company)

How would you define the Tokio Hotel style?
Tom: Tokio Hotel is a diversified German rock, energetic and sincere.

What do you understand by "sincere"?
Bill: Tokio Hotel is not just the rock sound, it is also, and above all, the texts throughout which we speak with open hearts about the stuff that preoccupies us. In Germany, there are a lot of bands to whom the words mean very little. To what we are concerned, it's completely the opposite with us. The lyrics chosen and the subjects we approach count as much as the melody.

Which are your favourite themes?
Bill: Our songs evoke the frequent painful situations that the teenagers of our generation have to confront with. Thus we approach subjects like sorrows, jealousy, lack of love, the loss of a beloved person or the divorce of parents. But we are also sensitive to the postive aspects of life such as love and friendship.

Bill, where do you draw your inspiration from?
Bill: The ideas rarely come into my mind when I am "fastened" at my desk or alone in my room. I rather need to be sitting in the back of a noisy bus or on the hallways of an airport in order to let my mind wonder around to find inspiration. In those moments I write down at once my ideas on a small notebook that I always carry around with me.

Which is your favourite song from the album?
Georg: On concerts, we all have a true preference for Schrei. It's such a dinamic piece...It allows us to release a multitude of emotions from within us. To perform Schrei on stage is pure bliss!

Just before you get on stage, what do you do?
Gustav: Usually, all 4 of us meet in one place about half an hour before the curtains are 'pulled up'. And there we 'feed' our stage-fright! (all laugh) We imagine having technical problems, we tremble at the idea that we won't be able rise to the expectations...The tension becomes rapidly unbearable. But the second we get on stage like "magnets" our bodies get filled with adrenaline.

Did you encounter any incidents during your concert?
Bill: No, nothing truly trouble-making. Besides that during the battery solo, it is not rare to see Gustav flare up from his stool to finnish the pice standing up. As to what I'm concerned, I have a disturbing tendancy of not respecting the order of the songs. Luckily, up to now the other membres of the band have always succeeded to follow me! (all laugh)

When did you realize that you've become stars?
Bill: It happened in July 2005, just before our first single, Durch den Monsun, came out in Germany. Before those times we would sing exclusively in small halls. Then, during the month of July 2005, we were supposed to perform at a local festivity in front of maximum 500 persons. However, at our arrival, thousands of fans were there and screaming our name. The surprise was absolute! All 4 of us, we looked at each other without saying a word, our breath almost cut off. Because the words were not strong enough to express what we were feeling back then. We knew were famous!

What kind of relationship do you have with your fans?
Tom: We love them sincerely. The signs of affection that they demonstrate towards us are so touching. And besides, it is useless to hide the fact that we adore the screams of the girls during our concerts! Those thousands of fans ready to do everything for us, that makes us completely crazy! (smiles)
Bill: I want to make use of this occasion to present our excuses to the French fans about the problems that happened at our latest autograph-signing session (28 September at Fnac in Paris). We have intended to sign autographs for everyone, but after half an hour, the security services of the shop have decided to interrupt the session. Hundreds of fans have waited for nothing behind closed doors...

Does celebrity scare you sometimes?
Bill: No, on the contrary. To be honest, none of us is here by hazard. It's such a happiness to make music that seduces the crowds, to be recognized, cheered. The life of an artist, marked by incredible sensations, shared emotions, even in excess, is a gift/delight each istant. In Germany, we sing sometimes in front of 20 000 hectic fans. Once you taste something like this, the ordinary life seems dull. All 4 of us try to make it so as this dream would never end.
