Wie geht eure Familie mit dem extremen Erfolg von Tokio Hotel um, den Fans und der Hysterie rund um die Band?
How does your family handle Tokio Hotel extreme success, the fans and the hysterics that surround the band?
Jede Band wünscht sich, irgendwann einmal einen solchen Durchbruch zu haben, vor allem, wenn man schon jahrelang in kleineren Clubs vor ein paar Leuten aufgetreten ist, sowie es die Jungs gemacht haben.
Every band would wish to have a breakthrough like this one day, especially when you have been performing in small clubs for a hand full of people for years, just like the boys did.
Aber das Ausmaß kann sich niemand wirklich vorstellen. Mittlerweile sind wir unheimlich gestreßt von den Massen an Fans, die unser Haus belagern, was soweit geht, daß sie bis in unseren Vorgarten kommen und durch die Fenster starren. Eigentlich haben wir kaum noch eine Privatsphäre, selbst wenn Bill und Tom nicht da sind.
But noone can imagine the magnitude of this. Meanwhile we are terribly stressed from the masses of fans that have placed our house under siege, even going as far as to come into our front garden and look through the windows. We actually don’t have any privacy anymore, even when Bill and Tom are not at home.
Hat sich das Verhältnis von Bill und Tom zu euch verändert seit sie auf der Karriereleiter nach oben marschieren?
Did the relationship between you (the parents) and Bill and Tom change whilst they were climbing their carreer ladder?
Bislang ist eigentlich alles so wie früher. Die, im Moment wenige Zeit, die sie zu Hause sind, genießen sie richtig. Wir reden natürlich viel über all die Dinge, die ihnen so auf ihren Konzerten oder Medienauftritten begegnet sind. Ihre Mutter fragen sie immer noch um ihre Meinung, ihr Verhältnis ist einfach sehr eng und offen. Das einzige, was sich extrem verändert hat ist, daß wir zusammen eben nicht mehr raus und etwas unternehmen können, weil sie sich auf der Straße auch nicht einen Meter bewegen können, ohne von hysterischen Fans umzingelt zu werden.
Uptill now, everything is really like it used to be. They thoroughly enjoy the little time they do get to spend at home. Of course we talk a lot about everything they experience during their concert (gigs) and TV and radio appearences. They still ask their mom about her opinion, they are simply very close and they have an open relationship. The only thing that has changed dramatically is, that we really can’t go out alltogether and do something, because on the street, they can’t move an inch without being surrounded by hysterical fans.
Wenn sie, wie in letzter Zeit passiert, flapsige Statements über Madeburg abgeben, gibt’s dann darüber Gespräche im Familienkreis?
When they, like they’ve done lately, make somewhat lame remarks about Magdeburg, do you have a chat about that amongst family members?
Natürlich, wir haben, besonders was jetzt diese Aussage angeht, sehr wohl mit ihnen gesprochen, daß wir solche Pauschalurteile nicht richtig finden. Andererseits muß ich sagen, daß die beiden eben auch Teenies sind, die schon immer so geredet haben, wie ihnen der Schnabel gewachsen war, sich nie ein Blatt vor den Mund genommen haben. Die Schwierigkeit liegt eben darin, daß jetzt jedes Wort auf die Waagschale gelegt wird, weil eben ein so großes öffentliche Interesse da ist.
Of course, we have especially told them, where statemenst like this are concerned, that we don’t think that generalizing statements like that are right. On the other hand, I have to say that they are both teenagers, that have always talked like that ever since they could talk, they have always been very outspoken. The problem is, that now every word they say is being weighed on a scale because there is such a big interest from the public.
Die Meinungen über Tokio Hotel sind ja recht gespalten, die einen feiern sie als die Newcomer und Teeniestars schlechthin, die anderen lästern laut über ihre Musik und ihr Outfit. Wie geht man mit dieser permanenten Schwarz-Weiß-Malerei eigentlich um?
The opinions about TH are really divided, some people simply see them as newcomers and Teenie stars, while others condemn their music and their outfits. How does one deal with people permanently painting them either black or white?
Von Bill und Tom weiß ich, daß sie damit ganz locker umgehen, für sie gehört das eben dazu, und im Moment genießen sie ihr neues Leben sozusagen, finden es aufregend und haben einfach Spaß. Besonders für ihre Mutter aber auch für mich ist das schon ein wenig anders. Manches regt einen einfach auf, weil es unwahr ist und mit Bill und Tom als Person gar nichts zu tun hat. Manchmal sorgt man sich ob sie das alles ganz unbeschadet durchstehen, aber sie wachsen und reifen an all dem unheimlich.
I know that Bill and Tom handle it quite losely, for them it’s all part of the deal, and at the moment they really enjoy their life, they think it’s exciting and are simply having fun.
Especially for their mother and also for me, things are slightly different. We sometimes get annoyed because its not true and it has nothing to do with Bill or Tom as a person. Sometimes we worry if they will get through this unharmed, but they grow up and learn from all this terribly fast.
Die Jungs wollten ja von Anfang an immer als sehr eigenständig und autonom gesehen werden, was ihre Musik, ihre Karriere betrifft. Was denkst du, du bist ja selbst Gitarrist, war dein Zutun zu ihrer Entwicklung?
From the very beginning the boys wanted to be in charge and made it clear they were making the decisions where their music and carreers where concerned. So what do you think, you are a guitarplayer yourself, what was your influence on their development?
Ich habe eigentlich versucht so was wie ein großer Bruder für sie zu sein. Ihren Musikstil haben sie von ganz allein gefunden. Indem sie sich einfach früh ausprobiert haben, viel in meiner Musikschule, der Rockschool, geprobt haben Ich denke aber, ich konnte ihnen die Leidenschaft für die Musik mitgeben. Und das ist auch das, was bei Bill und Tom bleiben wird.
I have actually tried to be like a big brother to them. They have developed their music style all by themselves. Because they simply started out really early, mostly in my music school, the Rock academy, trying out (rehearsing). I think however that I could pass on to them, the passion for music. And that is the part that will always stay with Bill and Tom.
Wie kommst du selbst als Musiker mit dem ungeheuren Erfolg deiner Söhne klar? Gibt’s so was wie Neid bei Dir?
How are you as a musician dealing with the incredicle succes of your sons? Are you at all jealous (envious)?
Ich habe ja erst mit 19 angefangen Gitarre zu lernen, was eigentlich für eine Karriere schon mal von vornherein zu spät ist. Und letztlich hat mir dann auch eine gute Band gefehlt um hier wirklich groß rauszukommen, ein Gitarrist allein ist einfach zu wenig. (Grinsend) Das einzige worum ich sie wirklich beneide ist, daß sie ihre Verstärker und Boxen, die ganze Ausrüstung halt, nicht mehr selbst schleppen müssen, und sich jede Gitarre aussuchen können, die sie haben wollen.
I have learned to play the guitar when I was 19, which is already to late if you want to have a successful carreer in music. And I lacked a good band, to really make it big, a guitarplayer on his own is not enough (grins*). The only thing I really envy them for, is that the don’t have to carry their own amplifiers and speakers, the entire equipment, and that they can afford every guitar they would like to have.
Was denkst du wie Tokio Hotel in einem Jahr gehandelt wird, der berühmte Saisonsenkrechtstarter oder dauerhafte Musikgeschichte?
How do you think TH will be seen in one year from now, the famous One-hit-wonder or a band that is here to stay?
Ich glaube es wird sich wandeln. Wenn der erste große Run rum ist, und das ist ja extrem was sie in so kurzer Zeit an Auszeichnungen, wie zuletzt die beiden Cometen, sowie Platz 1 in den Single- wie auch den Albumcharts, dann wird sicherlich eine etwas kleinere aber beständige Fangemeinde bleiben. Aber die Jungs haben schon früher bewiesen, daß sie das Zeug dazu haben einen Saal zum kochen zu bringen, lange vor Tokio Hotel, ließen sie es richtig rocken. Und eins ist sicher, sie können Leute begeistern und wenn einer berühmt sein und das aushalten kann, dann sind sie es!
I think it will change. When the first rush dies down, and it is extreme how many awards they have managed to acquire in such a short time, like at the Cometen the first spot in the single charts and the album charst, then I am sure a somehat smaller but very loyal Fan community will remain.
But the boys have already proved at an early stage, that they have the tools to really get things cooking (heat up a venue), long before TH, they already rocked. And one thing is sure, they can excite people, and if anyone can handle fame, its them !
