Get ready - Germany’s most successful rock band Tokio Hotel are set to cross the English Channel this summer, and send the youth of Great Britain into a frenzy. Their debut English single ‘Ready, Set, Go!’ is out on August 20th through Fascination Records. They have had four number one singles in Germany and their debut tour saw them play to over 400,000 people across 43 sold-out dates.

I Like Music caught up with the boys from Tokio Hotel to talk about their new single and album, their ambitions and twins being part of the band.

ILM: Your debut single Ready, Set, Go! is out in August. Can you tell us how the track came about and describe its whole vibe?

Bill: The song is about breaking out. It tells you that you can reach everything you want if you really want to go for it. It’s about not giving up and not being caught by fears or by other people telling you what you have to do. In the video you see all these people dressed in the same way, in this grey cloth, walking the same way, having no expression on their faces. They gave up their dreams and stopped trying to reach them. You see us also as “grey people” - like I call them. But we break out - we have our music. When they hear us play, they break out as well and leave everything behind - like us.

ILM: Your debut album Scream follows soon after. Which track did you have the most fun laying down in the studio?

Bill: There’s no special song to tell you about. While Scream is a mixture of the first and second German album, the songs we picked, were translated into English and I went into the studio to record them, while the others had time off.

All: Ooooohhhhh!

Bill: Yes, they had a vacation. So for me, being a perfectionist, that was quiet a challenge, because I wanted the songs to sound like a native speaker would sing them - not like a German trying to sing English. So it took me some time, but I’m really happy with the result. And I was singing these songs in German all the time, so it kind of felt like I was recording new songs. I’m really proud that we did the English Album.

ILM: Please can you describe the Tokio Hotel process of making music? Does it tend to be lyrics or melody first?

Bill: There’s no special way. I write the lyrics and the guys come up with the music. Sometimes I have an lyric idea, which I then tell the boys about and they come up with the chords. Or they have harmonies or chords first and I then come up with the lyrics. And we work with 4 producers - they bring in their ideas in as well. The whole process is a big team effort.

ILM: What did you learn about production while making this record?

Georg: When we recorded the first album we knew nothing about production or studio work. When we went into the studio for the second album it was a totally different story. We learned a lot and could really influence the production and sound of the album.

ILM: Ready, Set, Go! is about believing in yourself, taking risks and embracing your dreams. You’re clearly doing just that. What’s your advice to young musicians who are just starting out? Any tips?

Tom: Well, you need a lot of luck and you have to be at the right place at the right time. For us it was always important to stay ourselves. We knew exactly what we wanted and we were keen of being in control of everything. That was quite tough in the beginning, because we were so young and we had to really work hard to get the people to listen to us and respect us. All I can say is: Be yourself, believe in yourself and do your thing the way you want to do it!

ILM: What was the highlight from your tour where you played to 400,000 people across 43 sold-out dates? Any amusing stories you can share from the tour?

Tom: There have been so many special moments and highlights on this tour, you can’t pick one. First of all it was our first European tour - even the fact that we’re able to play all over Europe is a highlight in it itself. The first very first show in Prague, the first show in Germany in Kempten, in Paris - everything.

Bill: We always have a table tennis with us when we’re on tour. There have been a lot of funny moments - for me, not for the others. Did I mention that I was the best?

Tom: Sure! We let him believe this. We had our own DVD-Team with us - so you might get to see some of the funny moments on it.

ILM: How was the show at London’s Islington Academy?

Bill: It was the first time that I had to sing all the English songs of the album in whole concert, so I was very nervous before I went on stage - but luckily everything went perfect. The English fans gave as a fantastic welcome- it was great.

Gustav: It was amazing. Whenever we come to a country I’m always so excited about the fact, that our fans already know our lyrics and can sing along. That happened that night in London as well.

ILM: What are your favorite Tokio Hotel tracks to play live at the moment?

Bill: “Raise Your Hands” - it’s a song just for our fans, a song to party with them.

Georg: And “Break Away” - that’s a really fast one and great live song as well.

ILM: You guys are fairly young but have already your debut album has gone 10 x platinum in Europe and you’ve had four number one singles in Germany. How has the journey been so far and are you able to take time to enjoy it?

Georg: It’s been a fast journey - that’s for sure. And sometimes when I see us on TV and the place were we went and what has happened in the last 2 years, I really have to stop a minute, breathe and tell myself: Yes, that has really happened. But we try to live every minute. Cause that’s our dream and it came true. So we don’t want to miss one second of it.

ILM: What are your ambitions in life?

Bill: Being a musician as long as possible. I want to be on stage and play live till I’m really, really old.

Gustav: That’s what we all want.

ILM: Bill and Tom, you’re twins. Is there a duality to your music and personalities (for example, sensitive yet tough… chilled out, yet excitable)

Bill: We are very different - we both have our own style and our own personalities. We discuss a lot of things. But we are very alike at the same time. There is that special bond between us. We know what the other one is thinking, what he feels and what he wants to say even before he says it. We’ve been always together and we went through everything together and that’s how it will always be.

Tom: We wrote a song about us which is called “In die Nacht”

ILM: Do you drive? If so, what songs do you listen to when driving?

Tom: At the moment Georg is the only one, who has a driver`s license, which doesn’t make him a good driver - he is far away from that (everybody laughs)

Bill + Gustav: That’s right.

Tom: Bill, Gustav and me just passed our theoretical test in driving school. So keep you fingers crossed for our practical driving test.

Georg: I listen to a lot of different music depending on my mood. For example I like Fall Out Boy and Oasis

“I Like Music because …besides sleeping, my friends, my family and food - it’s the only thing I need.” BILL

“I Like Music because … no matter in which mood I am, music helps me in every situation.” GUSTAV

“I Like Music because … it makes people happy!” GEORG

“I Like Music because … music has always been my life. It means freedom for me!” TOM

Tom: Georg likes music because it’s his only friend (laughs). And for my part, I always was very talented in a lot of things (the others laugh) but music
has always been my life. It means freedom for me.
